Sleeping Giant – Painting in a Panic

“When I painted this I ran into more than a few problems along the way. It took me an hour to find a suitable view of Carrig Mountain in a field south-east of the summit.  But at least my vantage point silhouetted the Giant’s profile nicely against the bright September sky. I wanted to experiment with mixing my palette knife and atmospheric painting styles together while capturing the Sleeping Giant in the name of  My Place on Canvas. After a great start my confidence began slowly to fail and then drained away untill I had no idea if my work was really good or really terrible. There was still plenty of daylight so I simply turned my back on the problem and started a second canvas.

Painting #2 proved the route to solving the Sleeping Giant.
Painting #2 proved the route to solving the Sleeping Giant.

Forgetting any doubts now I torn into the new canvas trying new stuff for the first time and not caring how it turned out. The second picture was a little breakthrough in its own right, and I was delighted with myself. But most importantly it told me how I should finish painting #1.

Finally finished the Sleeing Giant Rod relaxes in the sun.

Later that year that year I thanked Gerry (who nominated the Sleeping Giant) for sending me out on that mission. My experience is the best paintings come from the toughest challenges.”

Sleeping Giant – Nomination Text

“When I think of my place I feel… Carrig 3301. I am from Glenealy and feel very grounded when I see the mountain upon my return home to my cottage each night. The mythical story is of a giant buried on top of the ridge and I can’t mistake the “Sleeping Giant’s” profile looking from here. This has always been a spiritually special place for me.” – Gerry Kinsella.

Sleeping Giant – “My Place on Canvas”

Rod Coyne paints sentiments and memories En plein air. His singular mission is to simply capture the favourite Wicklow scenes of others. Rod has motivated people to consider and articulate their relationship with their landscape. Then he has retold that story through paint. The result is a compelling mix of paintings and text called “My Place on Canvas”.
